Re-buys and Add-ons
Some, but not all, tournaments allow re-buys. A Re-buy allows players the chance to purchase additional chips at the tournament table. Re-buy tournaments can allow any number of re-buys and can put conditions on the re-buy option. A particular re-buy tournament may allow only a single re-buy, allow a re-buy only when a player has less than one thousand chips, or a may allow unlimited re-buys only during the first hour of the tournament.
Other tournaments allow add-ons. An add-on is the right to buy more chips while at the poker table. For example, a single add-on may be allowed at the end of the add-on period. At that time all players may purchase more chips regardless of the number of chips they have. The quantity of chips that a player can buy (add-on) is set as is the purchase price, this prevents players from adding-on say 10,000 chips for a tournament where everyone started with 800 chips.
Tournaments that allow add-ons and re-buys can greatly extend a players time in a poker tournament, and they also extend the length of the tournament itself.
